Our Top Ten Musts for Your First Book Club Meeting

Are you planning to start a book club with your friends but don’t know how to make it a success? First of all, congratulations! Book clubs are an excellent way to share your love for reading. However, the process can be overwhelming.

To make things easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of the top ten must-have things for your first book club meeting:

  1. The Book: The most important thing is the book! Choose a book you and your friends are interested in reading and discussing and giving everyone ample time to read the book before the meeting is always a good idea.
  2. A Comfortable Space: Choose a space that accommodates everyone in your book club. It can be your living room, a local coffee shop, or a library.
  3. Food, Glorious Food: Food is a must! You can ask your friends to bring snacks or beverages to share, or you can meet somewhere that has food options to order.
  4. Discussion Questions: Prepare some discussion questions in advance to keep the conversation flowing. You can find discussion guides online or create your own questions.
  5. Hear All Voices: One way to accomplish this is to set a timer for each discussion question to ensure everyone can speak.
  6. Pens and Paper: Encourage your friends to take notes while discussing the book. It’s a great way to remember key points and quotes from the book.
  7. A Leader: Have someone lead the discussion and keep everyone on track. This person can also introduce the book and provide some background information.
  8. Respectful Communication: Encourage everyone to respectfully share their thoughts and opinions. Disagreements are okay, but make sure everyone feels heard and valued.
  9. Open Mindset: Encourage everyone to keep an open mindset and be willing to listen to different perspectives.
  10. Next Book Selection: Decide on the book you will read next and the date for the next meeting. This way, everyone can start reading the next book in advance. Starting a book club can be a fun and rewarding experience.
